Do dogs pick their owners?

I would say yes.

When I was in sixth grade, one day, my dad went out and came back with a dog. He said the dog had been following him, so he decided to bring him home. People said the dog used to beg for food at restaurants, and someone had even tried to keep him, but him ran away. We named him Lucky.

This is the picture I found; smartphones didn't exist back then.

At first, my dad kept Lucky locked inside, afraid that if he ran out, he might never return. But after a week, we stopped locking him in. Lucky would go out to play and always come back. He chose to stay.

My dad used to say, "Cats bring blessings, dogs bring wealth." He loved buying lottery tickets, and after Lucky came into our home, my dad won a few small prizes. He was thrilled.

My dad had raised many dogs before, but Lucky was the only one who truly liked him. I never understood why Lucky chose my dad. My dad was a proud, self-important man. I often wondered—how did this dog grow so big all on his own? Why did he leave the person who had tried to keep him?

Lucky was incredibly smart. He understood human words, and he always gave off the vibe of a leader among dogs.

Then I went to middle school and started living on campus. My dad told me that on the first day I left for school, Lucky disappeared. My dad searched everywhere and found him the next day, sitting by the river. He brought him home, guessing that Lucky had gone looking for me. My dad told him I was away at school but would be back on the weekends.

I was amazed. Lucky had gone looking for me. He understood what it meant to part and what it meant to reunite. It turned out dogs felt emotions even more deeply than I had imagined. Maybe he even understood love better than I did.

A year and a half later, an accident took Lucky away. That morning, he went out to play and never came back. My dad, worried, went looking for him and found him lying in the middle of the road.

My dad was heartbroken. He said, "He was a really good dog."

I wonder if Lucky has chosen to be a little puppy again, and who it has met now. When I was little, I was afraid of the dark, and Lucky was always there with me.

Thank you, Lucky.
