🐾How to Create a Pet-Friendly Home?
Keeping a pet is a very happy thing. Pets bring us a lot of emotional comfort. Many friends will design their homes for their pets, like adding a wall for them to jump on or creating little cat tunnels. But pets have their own habits—some love scratching curtains, others can’t resist the sofa. So how do you pick the right furniture and fabrics?
1. Choose pet-friendly furniture and fabrics
Scratch-resistant fabrics: Go for microfiber, leather, or faux leather—they’re easy to clean and stand up to claws.
Removable couch covers: Pick ones that are machine-washable or easy to wipe down. No stress if they get dirty—just toss them in the wash.
Light-colored fabrics: Pet hair shows up way less on light colors compared to black. Sure, stains might be more obvious, but hair? Not so much.
Tip: Avoid velvet or silk—they trap pet hair and are a pain to clean.
2. Create a cozy, safe resting spot
Pets, like people, have their favorite spots to relax. Some love being near you, others prefer their own space.
Pet beds & blankets: Soft, supportive beds made from hypoallergenic materials work best. For cats, try plush, cave-like beds—they feel extra snug.
Sunny nap spots: Cats and dogs love basking in the sun, so place a comfy cushion or cat tree near a sunny window or balcony.
Cat hideouts: Not all cats use them, but shy ones might prefer an enclosed "house" for security.
3. Slip-proof floors & rugs
Friction-resistant floors: Some pets may like to pee and poop randomly, so choose the kind of floor that will not penetrate water stains and is easier to clean.
Non-slip rugs: Helps pets (especially playful ones) avoid slipping during zoomies.
Washable rugs: Skip the wool—opt for rugs you can toss in the washer.
4. Pet-safe houseplants
Love greenery? Some plants are toxic to pets, so choose wisely.
Safe picks: Spider plants, Boston ferns, bamboo—they’re non-toxic and freshen the air.
Avoid: Lilies, pothos, snake plants, aloe (some types), and dieffenbachia—they’re harmful if chewed.
Tip: Keep risky plants high up or out of reach.
5. Smart pet gadgets
Pet cameras: Check in and chat with your pet while you’re out.
Auto feeders/waterers: Ensures they’re fed and hydrated, and helps manage portions for pets on diets.
Bonus: These tools help track your pet’s activity too.
6. Protect your furniture
Scratching posts: Saves your couch by letting cats indulge their natural urge to scratch.
Chew toys (for dogs): Durable toys or long-lasting treats keep them from gnawing on shoes/furniture.
Don’t forget: Trim their nails regularly!
